Record breaker does it again

WHILE some people look at the feats in the Guinness Book of Records and think, “I could never do that,” American Ashrita Furman always thinks, “I could do that and maybe do it better.”

The 51-year-old, who has set 102 official Guinness Records, holds the most number of current standing records at 33. One of the records under his belt is for the most records held by an individual in different categories, awarded to him in August 1987.

For Furman, breaking records is a hobby.

Many of his record attempts may sound like child’s play but they have never been attempted before, which is why they are so challenging.

He had fun jumping on a pogo-stick while holding a dog and a hula-hoop.

“A closer inspection reveals what amazing tests of strength and endurance they really are,” said Furman.

He carried out five feats in Malaysia in the last three months, but they were not officially recorded.

His 38th record-breaking feat was walking on a knee for 1km and attempted recently at the Selangor Turf Club.

Furman accomplished the feat in 29 minutes and 29 seconds.

Scottish David Wardrop, Welshman Roger Chamberlain and local horse racing commentator Walter Vijayaratnam kept time.

However, there were no officials from the Guinness Book of Records present to certify the accomplishment.

The record for the feat is 37 minutes 33 seconds, held by another American.

“The sound of the horses racing in the background spurred me on. It was like competing with them to finish the race,” said a tired Furman.

The health food store manager from Queens, New York, captured the public’s imagination by breaking world records under different conditions and in exotic places.

He will be attempting his next feat at the Aquaria in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

He is currently training to do “underwater rope jumping,” a fight against the resistance of water, by doing the most jumps in one hour.
